The updated Blockstream protocol for the company’s satellite bitcoin network now allows you to download a full bitcoin node without an Internet connection.

Updating Blockstream’s satellite network has increased data transfer rates by 25 times, and users can synchronize a complete node without connecting to a network.

Blockstream’s satellite service provides cryptocurrency users with the possibility of making bitcoin transactions and exchanging information without connecting to the Internet in almost any corner of the world. For this, the company leased 6 geostationary satellites, which “broadcast the blockchain” to Africa, Europe, South America, North America and the Asia-Pacific region.

On May 4, the company announced that Blockstream Satellite 2.0 uses a standard data transfer protocol that provides greater bandwidth, additional coverage areas and “the ability to synchronize a complete bitcoin node from the genesis block to today.”

This is the first update to the company’s satellite bitcoin network since Blockstream introduced the API for its first protocol in December 2018. The DVB-S2 protocol for Blockstream Satellite 2.0 is reportedly increasing the spectral efficiency and reliability of the signal, as well as increasing network bandwidth.

Blockstream manager-strategist Samson Moe also explained that “now it takes less time to synchronize a new full bitcoin node via Blockstream Satellite than to synchronize a new full Ethereum node via broadband.”
